My Weight Loss Story: How My Confidence Grew

See My Weight Loss Story: Timeline for reference (this was 2013-2014). I suppose you could say my confidence started to grow when I began a diet called Shred, which is based on the principle of “keeping your body guessing”. Each week the meal plan was different, such as high fibre, smoothies/low carb, carb cycling, high protein etc. That worked in the sense that I was able to test out different styles of eating and started to learn what my body did and didn’t respond well to.

Healthy and Satisfying Day of Eating

Here's an example of my day of eating. I've tried many diets, meal plans and ways of eating and it was when I ditched all of the diet culture bullshit, I actually made more progress. So, I thought it might help you too. First Thing when you get up have a minimum of 250ml of water - make it warm if you like, add lemon if you like (to protect your teeth, use a straw). Meal 1 Some people don’t like to eat first thing when they wake up, others love a big breaky. My recommendati

    How to Combat Stress Eating

There’s two types of people in this world, those who eat when they’re stressed, and those who don’t. I am type 1, 100%. And since you're here, I’m guessing you’re feeling that too. When we’re stressed, our body goes into a Stress Response. This means our hormones go to work and create a fight or flight response in our body. It does things like pump blood into our limbs, affects our heart rate and it also does a few things to our gut. Our body releases a hormone called Cortiso

3 Types of Healthy Breakfasts that will Keep You Satisfied til Lunch

Whether you’ve got a crazy busy morning and you know you’ll have no time to eat or you just need to be on your game, let's get you sorted. 1) High fat/high protein – think your typical cooked breakfast, bacon, eggs, avocado, halloumi, tofu scramble, smoked salmon. Having (unsaturated) dietary fat builds cells and nerves, supports muscles, fights inflammation, and allows your body to absorb certain vitamins and minerals. Plus, it will fuel your body throughout the morning. Hav

6 Things to Make for Dinner when You're Exhausted

We’ve all been there, big day, you’re home later than normal and you haven’t even thought about what’s for dinner. You’re either ravenous, or really not feeling like eating but know you should have something. This is where meal-prepped meals come in handy, but if you’re not that organised, no problem!! Whether you’re cooking for just you, or the whole family, here are a few of my tried-and-true options: 1) Breakfast for dinner (otherwise known as “Brinner”) – if you have eggs

Why We Need to Stop Using the Word "Sneaky"

The word SNEAKY is defined as "furtive, sly" or "(of a feeling) persistent but reluctantly held; sneaking." Sneaky implies that it’s wrong, shameful, should be hidden away from prying eyes. You should be embarrassed, horrified even. How often are we seeing the caption “just having a sneaky________”. Whether it be wine, donuts, a nap, beverage, dessert, whatever… I don’t care. The more we try and justify ourselves, the more guilt we feel. I had to stop myself from commenting o

How to Get Motivated to Workout in Winter

When your alarm goes off in the pitch black and all you want to do is stay snuggled in bed. Or when the afternoon carb-attack hits (maybe yours happens after dinner?) and you find yourself chowing down on everything you shouldn’t be. You’re spending a lot more time bundled up on the couch watching Netflix. In my case, at the moment it’s The Handmaid’s Tale, Orphan Black, Plebs, How to Get Away with Murder, Santa Clarita Diet (don’t judge), House Rules (I like reno reality sho

    The Truth about Motivation

For years and years I have been through seemingly endless cycles of motivation highs and lows. I’m one of those people that have always carried a bit of extra weight, I think my body is comfortable that way. I’ve always had to work quite hard to be a healthy weight. Because of that, the body image issues are a bit of a frenemy to me. I used to lie in bed at night, cursing myself for eating badly and making excuses and telling myself tomorrow would be different. I would plan o

You didn’t worry about your diet or exercise at all. But now you have the guilts. And you don’t feel great. Maybe sluggish, bloated? Here’s 10 easy steps to sort you out: 1) Decide when your last day of eating like an asshole will be. If that’s today, cool. Look at the next steps now. 2) Have a large glass of water when yo

My Weight Loss Story: My Thyroid

Last year, and quite possibly for years prior, I had some trouble with my thyroid gland. Not many people know much about the thyroid, so here’s a run-down: “The thyroid gland is situated at the front of the throat, below the larynx (Adam’s apple), and comprises two lobes that lie on either side of the windpipe. The thyroid gland secretes hormones to regulate many metabolic processes, including growth and energy expenditure. If the thyroid gland is overactive or sluggish, the

Pros and Cons of Calorie Counting

Throughout my weight loss process, I have embarked on calorie counting probably four times. Recently my sister started calorie counting and we were discussing it. As I pondered this, I realised I used to be able to look at something, for example a muffin and guess how many calories would be in it. I seem to have lost touch with that skill. For my initial weight loss I did find that it helped me learn about caloric density and how much I should actually be eating in a day. I f
