For years and years I have been through seemingly endless cycles of motivation highs and lows.
I’m one of those people that have always carried a bit of extra weight, I think my body is comfortable that way. I’ve always had to work quite hard to be a healthy weight. Because of that, the body image issues are a bit of a frenemy to me.
I used to lie in bed at night, cursing myself for eating badly and making excuses and telling myself tomorrow would be different. I would plan out my whole day around eating fruit and salads, and going for a run. The next morning would come, and halfway through my toast, I would remember the plans I made. I’d think “I fucked up again, oh well, try again tomorrow”, and write-off the rest of the day.
I felt like shit about myself honestly. I dreamt of the “hot” body I’d always wanted; looking this way and that in the mirror. At that stage my motivation was purely about attracting boys, getting attention and feeling sexy. I was never a girl who attracted a lot of male attention, so this didn’t work out well for me. Don’t ask me why, I really don’t know. I was often friend-zoned. Which looking back now, I’m kinda glad coz those guys were all douchey in their own way.
Now that I’m older, I can tell you that those external motivations will not work. I crash dieted with the best of them, starving myself for a certain event, buying “incentive” outfits to fit into, signing up for running events even though I fucking hate running, buying gym memberships with the thought that by investing my hard-earned money, I would go.
Now, some of these things will work but you also need something deeper; a motivation that comes from your core. Your personal WHY.
By finding something deeper, we can push through those low patches because it means more to us than just looking good. And when we’re able to push through the times where life is testing us, we build resilience. And when we come out the other side, I want you to always celebrate that. Celebrating our victories will inspire you, and that will keep you moving forward and MOTIVATED.
Lots of people think they need Inspiration, to create Motivation and that will create Action. Well more often than not, Action, creates Inspiration and that will Motivate you to keep going. It’s like the chicken and the egg scenario. Well you have to start somewhere right?
